5 years??? Really???

Yep, today is a big day.  The day we celebrate that my darling daughter has been in the world for FIVE years!

Apparently, it’s a big birthday; everyone has been sending her cards with $5 in it. 🙂

As for me, I always make big deals out of birthdays.  In my humble opinion, it’s the one day of the year that really is all about “you”.   I try to make it as special as I can for each child.  One of the more fun traditions we’ve already established is hanging paper streamers in their doorway the night before.  That way, when they wake up & open their door, they walk through streamers.  Cheap, and fun. 🙂  This year Rachel asked a day or two before, “so… I’m going to have streamers in my door, right?”.

I can’t even begin to express how much I love my little girl.  She is my firstborn, and my only girl.  The combination is something powerful.  I see in her so much of me.  Not just the blonde hair and freckles, but a lot of the same personality too.  My prayer for her is that she would continue to grow and love Jesus; that she would never doubt our love for her, but most importantly that she would never doubt God’s love for her.

This will be a big year for us.  We’re taking a departure from homeschooling to put her in a private Christian school for a year.  I’m having a hard time with that as the weeks of summer fly by.  I have never been apart from her for repeated stretches of time like that…

It seems that turning 5 is a gateway into being a “big kid”.

I can’t help but be a little sad about that, even though at the same time I’m excited about what the future holds for her.

Big FIVE year old!!!

  2. Happy birthday, sweet Rachel! Is it just me, Whit, or does that picture make her look a lot like you? I always think she looks like Matty, but I don’t know… love you!
