July Gifts {Day twenty-five}

I feel like I should be a little ashamed at how infrequently I am posting these “gifts”.  I confess I look at the gift-of-the-day pretty much every day, but some days I just don’t get around to posting.  Some days I don’t even get around to the gratitude part to begin with.  I’m learning to let gratitude sink into my life, and realizing that on the especially difficult days, it’s a game-changer.

3 Gifts of Ending.  That can mean a lot depending on where you’re at in your life.  The thing I like most about endings is that they are often followed by beginnings.

My first two endings happened on the same road trip, two years ago.

First, I got to visit my grandpa.  His earthly ending occurred just weeks after we visited him.  That was an ending I could have done without; there never seems to be enough time to spend with certain people.  His beginning is so worth rejoicing over, though!  He ended his time on earth, but started his time sitting at the feet of Jesus.

The second, just a week after I saw my grandpa was a different kind of ending.  My sister became my sister.  Her time as a “foster” daughter officially ended when the judge agreed to us being her forever family.  “Foster” goes in quote marks because she was a daughter long before the state said she was.  My sisters may have had the title “foster” for a while, but that’s not what they were to us.  I love this ending, because it means that, for better or for worse, she stuck with us; it’s the beginning of a lifetime of telling gross stories around the dinner table. And because just a few months later it happened again with another sister, they both make it into this day of gratitude.    Aren’t they so lucky to have a biggest sister who makes them take selfies with her on their big day???

The third happened just today when this little ray of spunky sunshine ended her Icee-free days for good.  She has now experienced the chemically-laded, artificially dyed goodness of a cherry Icee, and she it was well received.  Definitely a happy ending and the a new beginning of the time in our lives where every grocery store trip starts with a request for this totally-bad-for-you-but-so-yummy treat.  FYI – I’m totally going to use the promise of an Icee as bribery for good behavior.  Totally.

Thankful for the endings, and the beginnings that go with them.
