what to do, what to do…

This past year we’ve been doing an homeschooling experiement.  My daughter, who is 4, has been working on a K-4 curriculum.  In addition, we jumped in to a homeschool co-op that meets once a week.  When we began this adventure, Matt and I agreed that it would be on a year-by-year basis.  The reasoning was …

I see, I see!!!

So, I think I mentioned a while back that I wanted to switch our homeschool math curriculum.  I like A Beka for so many reasons; their math curriculum is not one of them. 🙂 After much research, and extensive emailing/ facebooking/ phone-conversation-ing, I made my choice, asked Matt for the “ok” to order, and prayed …

the bronze rat

This past Friday during the speech class I facilitate during our homeschool co-op, I almost had to laugh out loud. The kids were watching a DVD featuring the presenter, who was illustrating how to give a narrative speech by telling a story.  It went like this (well, the abbreviated version…): A man visiting San Francisco …

homeschool kids aren’t really that different

We are members of a homeschool co-op.  It is exactly what it sounds like.  A bunch of families who homeschool come together, and the moms and dads share their gifts with others while their children get to be around their peers, and learn from other adults. It’s great.  I reallyreallyreally like our co-op.  My kids …

here we go!

Today was our “official” first day of K-4 homeschool.  Annnnd, it was pretty good.  The homeschool part didn’t really take that long.  The curriculum we’re using (Abeka) starts out slow, and then builds up.  Example:  this week we do phonics only.  Then next week math is added in, and then handwriting, you see?  I like …

already Wednesday?

I can hardly believe that Wednesday has already come this week!  While I do feel as if I’ve been fairly productive,  I also feel as if I have so much more to do!  I suppose it doesn’t ALL have to be accomplished this week… 🙂 However… Next week we start homeschooling.  I am nervous, mostly …

a week to remember

This week will be a week to remember.  First, Eli (my middle baby) has run out of Pull.Ups.  Last night was his last.  Since he has been staying completely dry for a while now, Matt and I have decided to not purchase any more for him.  TONIGHT is the first Pull.Up-free night for Eli!  I’m excited …

and the prize goes to…

ME! (for not going completely stark-raving-mad this week… 🙂  ) It has been forever since I’ve blogged, or maybe it just seems that way.  This week, really, the past 2 weeks or so, have been insanely insane.  Quick recap (since that’s all I seem able to do these days) July 28th:  brother gets arrested (again).  …

teaching reading at home

This summer I’m working on some of the readiness skills for K-4.  We’re cutting shapes, lines, zig-zag lines, curvy lines… We’re coloring, we’re counting, we’re gluing, we’re (gulp) reading. I’ve always had an intense fear of teaching my children to read.  Of all of the elementary school aged milestones, this one terrifies me the most.  …

pregnancy & homeschooling

August started out with a bang for us and homeschooling.  Although we are just in the preschool phase of things, I was joyfully planning crafts and activities to coordinate with books we were reading to my hearts content. Then, the second half the the second trimester hit, along with preparations for Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.  …
